"The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy." (Sacrosanctum Concilium,VI.112)
Sacred Music is a vital part of the liturgical life of St. Augustine Cathedral. The goal of our Cathedral sacred music, under the leadership of Mr. James Richardson, is to develop a program that encompasses the authentic Traditions of the Church and the multiple cultural traditions of the Diocese of Kalamazoo. As the Mother Church of the Diocese, the Cathedral Sacred Music program serves as a paradigm of liturgical music for the Church in Southwest Michigan, placing a particular emphasis on Gregorian Chant (both in Latin & the vernacular), traditional pipe organ playing, and Latin Polyphony.
All adults capable of matching pitch are encouraged to contact Mr. Richardson about singing in choir; no formal training is necessary, and practice tracks are made available to help those who learn best by ear.
